British Airways to operate five weekly flights to Costa Rica starting October 2026

The British airline will increase its flight frequencies to Costa Rica during the European winter season, from October 2026 to March 2027, and will shift its operations to Heathrow Airport, the United Kingdom’s primary international hub.

British Airways confirmed the increase in service to Juan Santamaría International Airport, expanding from three to five weekly flights. Operations will take place on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

As part of this significant update, the airline will move its current operations from Gatwick Airport to Heathrow, enhancing overall connectivity and increasing cargo capacity between Costa Rica and Europe.

This new schedule will provide improved connections from across Europe—particularly within the United Kingdom—further strengthening Costa Rica’s air connectivity.

Strengthening European connectivity

Nonstop flights will depart London at 11:10 a.m., arriving in Costa Rica at 4:40 p.m. The return flight will depart at 6:55 p.m., arriving at Heathrow the following day at 11:05 a.m.

This schedule will allow travelers to benefit from more seamless connections to other European capitals, both on arrival and departure from London, as well as improved domestic connectivity within the UK.

The route will be operated using a Boeing 787-8, featuring a total of 204 seats, including 31 in Business Class, 37 in Premium Economy, and 136 in Economy Class.

According to recent data from the Costa Rican Tourism Board, the United Kingdom currently ranks as the third largest European source market for travelers to Costa Rica.

This announcement represents a milestone in the country’s air connectivity and is part of the joint efforts between the public and private sectors to attract new airlines. The new route strengthens the connection with Florida, a key market with strong tourism, corporate, and visiting friends and relatives (VFR) potential. With this addition, Costa Rica becomes the airline’s fifth international destination.

Costa Rica Leads Global Ranking for Repeat Travel Intent

A global study conducted by SCS Chauffeurs and published by Time Out, ranks Costa Rica as the country with the highest intention of revisitation worldwide. Costa Rica topped the ranking with 895 positive mentions, surpassing internationally renowned destinations such as Italy, Japan, and the United Kingdom, reinforcing its strong global appeal.
