Costa Rica Travel: Ballena Bay

Writen by Jenny Araya

the Marino Ballena National Park, I learnt about another great beach called Ballena Bay, 4.5 miles south from Uvita. Ballena Bay was a nice surprise in my Costa Rica vacation travel. If you want to know more, keep reading, and I’ll tell you more about this beautiful beach.

The Marino Ballena National Park was created in 1990 with the object of protecting several species of whales that come nesting each year between December and April, near the coast, as well as the immense coral reef near the Ballena Island. It covers approximately 110 hectares of land and 5,400 hectares of ocean. Due to its remoteness, it is a quiet place, not so crowded and has an amazing natural beauty.

It is near other beaches like Uvita, Ventanas and Tortuga, and its location makes easy to go to all those places in small periods of time. The whole area is a great Costa Rica eco tour, and it is also perfect for just relaxing or sunbathing at the beach. Costa Rica birding tours are welcome here, due to the huge variety of species that migrate or live in the area.

Ballena Bay Beaches is a beautiful, pristine beach with lots of Costa Rica hotels, and friendly for Costa Rica budget vacations. It is not a town, but a land strip with an amazing beach and many services, including touristic activities such as kayaking, horse back riding, sunbathing and relaxing or visiting the Marino Ballena National Park, where you will see the green rain forests in the surroundings, mangroves, the largest coral reef in the Central American Pacific, dolphins and the turtles that come to nest between May and November.

To get to Ballena Bay Beach from San Jose, drive over the Costanera Highway, go pass the Quepos/Manuel Antonio exit for one hour to the south, pass Dominical, Uvita and continue driving for 4.5 miles. The weather in Ballena Bay is warm and humid during all year, with heavy rains in the rainy season (May to mid-December).
