The Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge is near the border between Costa Rica and Nicaragua and is one of the most important wetlands in the country. It was declared of global importance, receiving the RAMSAR category, due to the number of migratory birds that are frequently here and for the protection of endangered species.
The Río Frío, on the bounds of the refuge, is its largest source of water, bringing this magical area to life and where we will have the possibility to admire several animals. On the road to the town called Los Chiles, you can see the traditional crops of the area such as pineapple and sugarcane, as well as large livestock farms. Once there, we will navigate the river in a comfortable covered boat, with great visibility and with life jackets.
Together with the naturalist guide, we will take a tour of the river and for two hours we will look for monkeys, sloths, alligators, turtles and hundreds of species of flora and fauna that inhabit the refuge. At the end of the tour, we will stop to enjoy a typical Costa Rican lunch and then return to La Fortuna.
Duration: 7 hours.
What to wear? Light clothing, raincoat or poncho, repellent, sunscreen, camera and binoculars.
What is included? : boat tour, naturalist guide specialized in birds, entrance to the refuge, bottled water, box breakfast and typical lunch.
Important: It is essential to bring your passport (identification in case of nationals) since Caño Negro is located in the border area and this document can be requested.
