Itinerary

Night in selected hotel in San Jose.
Poas Volcano, Doka coffee plantation and the rural towns of Sarchí and Grecia (B, L)
Breakfast included in the hotel. One day tour to Poas Volcano, Doka coffee plantation and Sarchí and Grecia rural towns.

To get to the different attractions included during this day, we will take the Pan-American Highway towards the city of Alajuela. In route we will see the Agriculture Monument, the Monument to Juan Santamaria and the famous Mango Park. As we continue towards the Poás Volcano, we will notice the change in temperature and vegetation; we will see coffee plantations, fern, flower and strawberry farms along the way, creating a colorful landscape.

The Poas is one of the most spectacular volcanoes in the country, with its enormous crater measuring one kilometer in diameter and 314 meters deep. The crystal blue sulfur pools will amaze you, along with the steam rising from the various volcanic vents. We will also hike to the beautiful Botos Lagoon. Lunch is included in Doka Estate Coffee Plantation, a third-generation coffee plantation, where we will have the opportunity to learn how coffee is picked, milled, ground and roasted.

Our third stop will be the beautiful town of Grecia, in Alajuela Province. Mostly farmers by profession, the people here are relaxed and laidback. Being an important agricultural hub of the country, sugar cane is grown and harvested in Grecia in huge amounts, as is organic coffee and pineapples. This town is an important tourist destination mainly due to its unique metal church, which is a deep dark red color. The Cathedral de la Mercedes is a gothic style church made from metal pieces that were imported from Belgium in the 1890’s. This church is as beautiful from the inside as it is impressive from the outside. In order to catch a glimpse of local lifestyle, we will also visit the central market area.

Our last stop is Sarchi, known as the Cradle of Costa Rican Artisans thanks to its fine workshops. Here we will have time to enjoy the artistic work of local artisans as they create the famous typical oxcarts and you will have the opportunity to look for a special souvenir to take home.

What to bring? Light jacket, comfortable shoes, binoculars and camera.

Irazu Volcano, Lankester Gardens and Orosi Valley (B, L)

The province of Cartago offers three foremost attractions combined in this tour. Appreciate the majesty of the imposing Irazu Volcano, delight yourself with the beautiful orchids of the Lankester Gardens and observe the panoramic beauty of the Orosi Valley. Irazu Volcano is the highest active volcano in Costa Rica, just an hour and a half from San Jose, easily visited taking a scenic road leading right up to the summit crater. It is a strato volcano with a summit elevation of 3,432 meters (11,260 ft. On a clear day, it is possible to see both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. However, such clear days are very rare indeed, and most of the time the volcano's summit is covered. The route to get to Irazu will take you through some of the most important agricultural areas in this province, thanks to the richness of the soil produced by the volcanic ashes. Internationally recognized for its noteworthy collections of epiphytes, the Lankester Botanical Garden was established in 1973 as a center for the exhibition, conservation and research of tropical epiphytic plants, with a special interest in orchids. The field collections, the collections in greenhouses and the gardens host over 3,000 species of plants. Lunch included.
