The Heredia province of Costa Rica is located in the Northern side of the country, at 12 km north of San Jose, the capital city. Looked in a Heredia map, the area borders with Nicaragua (to the north), with the province of Alajuela (to the west), with the province of Limon (to the east), and with the province of San Jose (to the South).
It is important to mention that Heredia is the smallest province in the country, but it is extremely important due to its vast coffee plantations. Coffee produced here is worldwide recognized for its great quality, taste and the ways it is produced, keeping the balance between a high end product and sustainable ways of taking care of the crops.
According to the metrics, the region is located at an altitude of 1150 meters above sea level and keeps an average temperature of 23º C. Of course it may change according to the day and the climate conditions or the region in which one is located, so it is important to keep this in mind when considering this place in the itinerary of your next trip.
This area features the ecological wonders of the Central Mountain range. The landscapes here are simply amazing, the great weather, and the different hills make this province a very appreciated one among travelers, who look for it thanks to its great boutique hotels and the variety of adventure and cultural tours that can be enjoyed here. Besides, the Barva Volcano is located in this region at approximately 2,906 meters above sea level, and it can also be visited as it offers a natural attraction in its paths to everyone who visits it.
Due to its landscapes, the region is perfect for those travelers who are looking for relaxation and a deep connection with themselves, as there can be found great secluded boutique hotels, with all the necessary amenities for an unforgettable vacation.
Heredia is a great place to stay as it is very close from the Juan Santamaria International Airport, which is the main airport in the country, so it is a great option to consider if you want to spend the first or the last night near the airport but far enough from the hustle and bustle of San Jose downtown.
Other important place of Heredia is the rainy Braulio Carrillo National Park, which is a popular tourist attraction due to its immense biodiversity and its characteristic weather, as well as the rural towns of San Isidro and San Rafael, both exhibiting some beautiful gothic revival churches and a lot of truly scenic places with great beauty.
The fauna here is abundant and diverse species of birds, reptiles, and butterflies can be found, among others. This is great for nature lovers, as there are plenty of natural activities to enjoy in the area. Travelers here can enjoy the magic of the Peace Waterfall Gardens, a private property in which visitors can enjoy a hike downhill to the waterfalls, and the observation of different species that live there, including a butterfly and a serpentarium.
The head of the province is the city of Heredia, locally known as the “city of the flowers”. This appellative was given not for the plants, but for –according to the popular versions- two very beautiful sisters with the surname “Flores” (flowers, in Spanish) that lived in Heredia. It is said that men from different provinces used to say that they were going to Heredia to the “city of flowers”.
Heredia is also the venue of the National University, which is one of most important public universities of Costa Rica, together with the UCR (Universidad de Costa Rica) and the TEC (Instituto Tecnológico de Costa Rica); which is also important to know as many groups of students come yearly in order to study or take congresses, and also take advantage of their time in Costa Rica and visit its beaches, mountains, and diverse tourist attractions while here.
The city has a lot of nightlife options, great restaurants of local dishes and international cuisines, bars, places to go dancing, malls with different stores, convenience stores, and cinemas, are just few examples of what travelers can find in this beautiful city during their trip.
The area is a great option for visitors looking relaxation, culture, tranquillity and a great province to discover and enjoy when vacationing in the country. High quality hotels, great Spas, close contact with nature, exquisite dining, cultural tours, and lots of fun awaits everyone who choose this city as a stop during their holidays in Costa Rica.
