Day 2

One-Day Tour: Poás Volcano National Park and the La Paz Waterfall Gardens (B, L)

Lunch is included during the visit to the Peace Lodge.

Today we will have an early departure, around 07:30 am, towards Poás Volcano National Park. The Poas Volcano is one of the world's largest geysers with an awesome crater, over 1.5 km. wide! The volcano is active, but completely safe for viewing. As we ascend towards the Poás Volcano, we will notice the change in temperature and vegetation; we will see coffee plantations as well as fern, flower and strawberry farms along the way, creating a beautiful landscape.

We will not only admire the impressive main crater with its sulfur fumaroles, but also learn about the different ecosystems in this beautiful national park. The Poas National Park is a 9,884 acre reserve with rich tropical vegetation and animal life. If weather permits, the visit can also include a hike through the surrounding forest that is teeming with typical plant life and exotic birds, finishing at a restful, emerald green, tropical lagoon.

Located only one hour from San Jose, La Paz Waterfall Gardens is a private reserve of more than 70 acres (28 hectares). It features five waterfalls, safe hiking trails and animal exhibits among other interesting attractions. The property allows visitors to wander through 2 miles of paved trails which take them to some awesome waterfalls. The La Paz Waterfall is the most famous as it can be seen from the road. In the park, guests are afforded views from platforms above, below and in front of the falls for great photo opportunities.

The Hummingbird Garden attracts 26 different species of hummingbirds. In the Butterfly Garden and on site laboratory, visitors will have the opportunity to observe the most colorful species of butterflies while learning about the lifecycle and metamorphosis of these beautiful creatures. The Serpentarium exhibits 30 of the most beautiful and deadly snakes of the country including the Golden Eyelash Viper. In the Ranarium, frogs roam freely throughout a landscaped enclosure taken care by knowledgeable guides. La Casita de la Paz is a farmhouse reproduction that gives a cultural insight into the lives of rural Costa Ricans. The park has also a refuge for wild birds and felines. These birds and wild cats come from a center that lost funding and had to close.

Since the MINAE (the Costa Rican Ministry of the Environment) did not have the resources to care for these animals, they were placed under the care of La Paz Waterfall Gardens. These cats were either very old, injured or had been exposed to humans for too long to be released back into the wild. Many of the birds have been either captured illegally by hunters and confiscated by the government or donated by their owners and lack the basic skills to survive in the wild on their own.
Recommended: Comfortable walking shoes (preferably with a thick tread for hiking the trails and hundreds of stairs), shorts or comfortable pants and a lightweight jacket or raincoat.
Important note: The Park ranges in altitude from 5,200 feet to 4,200 feet so it can get chilly when the clouds roll in.

After the tour you’ll return to the hotel. Lodging in Costa Rica Marriott, Standard room.

Day 3

San José to Tortuguero

Lodging in Manatus Hotel, Deluxe room. All meals are included in the hotel

Early departure from San Jose across the spectacular Braulio Carrillo National Park towards Tortuguero. A stop is included in Guápiles for a delicious typical breakfast. The bus ride continues through banana plantations and rural areas to Caño Blanco or Pavona pier. A two hour boat ride through the canals will take you to Manatus Hotel... just in time for lunch. In the afternoon, a guided visit to the picturesque town of Tortugero and to the Sea Turtle Information Center (formerly known as the Caribbean Conservation Corporation) is scheduled The boat ride to the town lasts 2 minutes!.

During this visit you will discover the ways of life of the local residents of Tortuguero and learn about the efforts made by the Sea Turtle Conservancy in favour of the conservation of endangered sea turtles in Costa Rica since 1959.

Tortuguero beach is the most important nesting site of the endangered green turtle in the Western Hemishpere. Giant leatherback, hawksbill, and loggerhead turtles also nest here. The green turtle population is believed to have come perilously close to extinction in the 1960s when nearly every female turtle arriving to nest in Tortuguero was taken for the export market for turtle soup.

STC was established in 1959 specifically to study and protect Caribbean green turtles. Working closely with the Costa Rican government, STC helped establish Tortuguero National Park in 1970, a move that offered protection to the turtles and strictly limited the number of turtles that could be taken. STC researchers and volunteers, who are based at STC's John H. Phipps Biological Field Station, continue to monitor nesting trends, growth rates and reproductive success begun by Dr. Archie Carr in the 1950s. This visit lasts according to clients interested, between 1 to 2 hours.
Before dinner, free time to enjoy the pool or just relax. Dinner will be served from 7:00 pm

Hotel description:

At only few minutes away from Tortuguero National Park, this hotel is located on a land strip between two canals. The 12 stylish bungalows are surrounded by tropical vegetation and all provide air conditioning, cable TV, mini bar, spacious bathroom and a cozy, private patio with additional outdoor shower.

The hotel offers: restaurant, bar, swimming pool, Spa, internet access, pool table, laundry service, gym and a small art gallery. Day 4

One-Day Tour: Tortuguero (B, L, D)

Lodging in Manatus Hotel, Deluxe room. All meals are included in the hotel

After breakfast, explore Tortuguero National Park. Depending on weather conditions, we will explore the canals in small, open boats to allow better visibility and even a closer look to the flora and fauna, or we will take a hiking tour to the park.

About Tortuguero:

Tortuguero is a network of navigable lakes, rivers and canals (both natural and man-made) that are used for transportation and are a great place for observing local wildlife. The climate is warm and humid. Daily temperatures average 26 degrees C (79 F) and annual average rainfall is over 5,000 mm (200+ inches). Warm days are tempered by trade winds and cool nights. Abundant wildlife inhabits Tortuguero, including 57 species of amphibians, 111 species of reptiles, and 60 species of mammals.

More than 300 species of birds live in Tortuguero for all or part of the year. Birdwatchers commonly see keel billed toucans, slaty tailed trogons, Montezuma oropendulas and a variety of parrots. Birds common along the canals include green and great blue herons, egrets, belted kingfishers, anhingas, jacanas, sun grebes and several species of hawks and kites.

Other animals commonly seen are fishing bats, three toed sloths, iguanas, basilisk lizards, poison dart frogs, and howler, white-faced and spider monkeys. The tracks of river otters, collared peccaries, and Baird's tapirs are often seen on the banks of rivers and canals. Caiman are commonly observed in the waterways, which also are home to garfish, manatees, crocodiles, crustaceans, and an occasional bullshark. Jaguars, ocelots, and kinkajous inhabit the park, but are rarely seen.

Two tours are included this day. Generally the tour to the canals is in the morning and the hiking tour is in the afternoon. However, due to weather conditions, the administration of the Park sometimes closes the trail without previous notice. When this happens, this hike will be replaced by another boat ride to a different section of the Park.

Lunch and dinner included at the hotel’s restaurant.
Optional night tour (not included in the package) from July to September to observe the turtle nesting
