Irazu Volcano

Irazu National Park is an active volcano with a long history of eruptions and eruptive cycles. It is located on the Central Volcanic Mountain Range, in the massive Irazu, 31 km northeast of the city of Cartago, Oreamuno Canton province of Cartago. The one thing you need to realize about this unique volcano, is that from its foot born several rivers that feed the basins of the Rio Chirripo River Reventazón Sarapiqui River and Rio Grande de Tárcoles. The first historical situation of an eruption dates from 1723, when the main crater was responsible for the great eruption, causing many tremors.

The Irazu Volcano presents the particularity that, on clear days, you can see from the top (western edge of the main crater), both the Pacific and Atlantic Ocean, much of the national land that take you to Lake Nicaragua. The diversity of animals is relatively low, its altitude, deforestation and volcanic activity. Among the birds include species such as reed, acorn woodpecker, the thrush, the goldfinch, the brown owl, the red climber, the pitorreal and several species of hummingbirds. Some mammals can be observed are the rabbit, coyote, armadillo, porcupine, weasel, Margay, and red squirrel.

Also, you can find there almost pure oak forest, oak tree bark hard, abundant in the Atlantic sector of the volcano, part of the Costa Rica attractions in this area. They are patches of primary vegetation, including life in the montane rain forest on the banks of rivers, northeast sector of the main crater, with species such as black oak, alder, sage, Matagente, parrot, shallots, candelillo, dock and umbrella poor.
