The only way to partake of the true strength and life of the rain forest is by visiting it in the dark. Hiking in the Corcovado National Park

One of the richest wildlife areas in Costa Rica is the Corcovado National Park, located in the Osa Peninsula, which is a zone with stunning beauty that starts in the Central Pacific and extends over to the Southern region, where some of the most wonderful beaches in Costa Rica are located. The Peninsula is another of the most popular touristic attractions in Costa Rica.

The Corcovado Antonio National Park is one of the largest parks in Central America and has the biggest primary tropical forest in the American Pacific. The biological diversity is huge, and Corcovado is considered by National Geographic as the most intense biological place in the world. However, the touristic activity is a threat for the wildlife of the place, since many of the species living there need a large space free of human activity in its natural conditions.

Some of these large animals living in Corcovado are the American Crocodile, the Spectacled Caiman, and large populations of felines like Jaguars, Ocelots and Pumas. Four monkey species are found in Corcovado, including the endangered Squirrel Monkey. Reptiles, amphibians and marine life live in Corcovado too. The famous Poison Dart Frog and several species of turtles can be seen in Corcovado.

The variety of wildlife can be explained by an equal variety of ecosystems, having different types of vegetation, which are the habitat for all those different species of animals. That’s the reason why Corcovado is one of the best Costa Rica ecology tours.

You can enter the park via Puerto Jimenez or Drake Bay, which are the main two entry points. You can take a flight from San Jose to the south Pacific, or drive from Perez Zeledon using the Interamerican Highway, or from the Central Pacific using the Costanera highway. The weather in Corcovado is tropical humid, with strong rains during the rainy season, especially between July and December, when some sections of the park may be closed.

Once in the park, you can stay in the lowlands either camping or at one of the ranger stations, and if you want to take advantage of the Costa Rica guided tours you should stay for two or three days at least, use the marked trails and plan your route in advance. There is so much to discover in Corcovado.
