To the northeast of the Central Valley, this region includes a large part of the provinces of Alajuela and Heredia, extending to the north to the border of the province of Guanacaste and Nicaragua. Sarapiqui stands out for its primary forests, swamps, and the Sarapiqui river, in a biologically rich territory, with temperatures that oscillate between 26°C and 28°C; a hot, humid land which can be explored by way of the dense network of trails within the protected areas which are of great importance for the conservation of birds, butterflies, felines, insects and plants. San Carlos offers a landscape of exceptional beauty with its forests, lagoons, fields of crops, rivers, natural hot springs, and the most active volcano of Costa Rica: Arenal. In other words, sanctuaries where one can breathe peace and amaze with the majestic power of nature. The San Ramon county, famous for its tropical cloud and rain forests in the highlands, is noted for its variety of epiphytes, mosses and ferns, and is home to more than 225 species of birds.

The Río Toro offers over 45 continuous and exciting rapids along more than 16 kilometers of deep-canyon gorges and waterfalls, where sloths, monkeys and tropical birds, such as toucans and the Montezuma Oropendula can easily be observed. The thrilling Río Toro is located only one hour from La Fortuna. Once at the river, guides will give you a thorough safety talk and will give you a helmet, a life jacket and a paddle before the adventure begins; you will be paddling for more than 2½ hours. A stop will be made along the way for a nice, tropical fruit break and a typical lunch is included after the rafting.

This ecological tropical park is located next to Arenal Volcano, one mile south of La Fortuna. Visitors will find plenty of opportunities to experience adventure and fun surrounded by lush flora and fauna. The park offers several guided tours, such as rappelling from an 80-meter waterfall, canopying, horseback riding through the tropical rain forest, bird watching, sunset and volcano tour and several kilometers of trails for a healthy and educational natural history walk. There are look out points where the astonishing Pino Blanco and La Fortuna Waterfalls and the magnificent Arenal Volcano can be observed.

A four-hour horseback ride of five and a half kilometers from the town of La Fortuna, across picturesque farms and forests, to the fabulous waterfall of 70 meters. Enjoy a refreshing swim in the natural pool of the fall. Entrance fee included. Take insect repellent, rain gear, binoculars, camera, swimsuit and towel.
