There are many stories about the stone spheres that have been found in the country, even there has been speculation about their origin, meaning, material and technical rounded. On May 16, the archaeologist Ifigenia Quintanilla clarified the myths to the Costa Rica Tourist Board (ICT) officials and explained its historical-cultural importance. The archaeologist said that the stone spheres dating from 400 B.C. and they have been found mainly in the South Pacific, in 56 of the 1,100 archaeological sites in the region.

What do they mean? Its use was associated with societies such cacique or headquarters. They are related to social change and linked to places where people lived, becoming a popular means of communication, however, we do not know the message they conveyed.

What are they made? Were drawn mostly from a stone called gabbro, but there are also sandstone and limestone. Was used in its manufacture knowledge of cutting and polishing rocks with other harder.

What is the largest stone sphere found? The larger sphere is 2.50 meters in diameter and is located on a hillside near to Térraba River Bridge between Palmar Norte and Palmar Sur. In the School of Agronomy of the University of Costa Rica, is the largest in the Central Valley, measures 1.90 meters in diameter and was brought from the south.

How many spheres have been found? The National Museum has recorded 144 stone spheres across the country, however, Quintanilla has a vast and comprehensive record of 286, without taking into account those that have moved to San Jose.

According to the archaeologist, 20 years ago began to realize the value of the spheres and it is urgent to be declared World Heritage by UNESCO to give them the value for historical and cultural heritage of our country.
