FONAFIFO program, Payment for Environmental Services (PSA) has protected or replanted a total of 728,814 hectares since 1997, equivalent to 14% of the Costa Rican territory.
This program is coordinated by Fondo Nacional de Finaciamiento Forestal (FONAFIFO), attached to the Ministry of Environment, Energy and Telecommunications (Minaet). People volunteer their property for a specific purpose in return for an annual payment in order to keep and protect it. From 2009 to 2010, revenue for the PSA rose by 44.8%, mainly because the regular budget was doubled by the Treasury. Since 1997 FONAFIFO received ¢ 98.517 million, about 0.5% of gross domestic product (GDP) of Costa Rica in 2010. |
