The Global Peace Index, released in May by the Institute for Economics and Peace, Costa Rica ranked as the second most peaceful country in Latin America after Uruguay and above Chile. In the overall index, Iceland is the most peaceful country in the world, second New Zealand and Japan third.

Worldwide Costa Rica is ranked in the 31 position. This report tested 23 different indicators applied to obtain this ranking, such as deaths from internal and external conflicts, security and social protection, prison population, level of crime and violence, homicides, violent demonstrations, access to weapons, among other variables.
