San Gerardo de Dota, sólo 53 kilómetros al suroeste de la capital en la carretera Panamericana, es un hábitat natural para muchas especies de flora y fauna, y constituye un nicho ecológico donde vive el quetzal resplandeciente durante todo el año. Esto está dentro de la mayor extensión de áreas protegidas del país, una zona formada por 13 unidades diferentes que suman en total 95.000 hectáreas ... muy recomendable para los amantes de la naturaleza.
