The fascinating afro-caribbean culture predominates in this region. Beautiful beaches, coral reefs, and protected areas with trails which permit access into the heart of the tropical forest, are located on the southern part of the coast. The Tortuguero canals are of great importance for their scenic beauty and as a site of refuge for the marine turtles to lay their eggs. For
those who love diving, surfing and snorkeling, this place is undoubtedly an earthly paradise.
Located less than one hour from the historic Caribbean town of Port of Limón and 2:45 hours from the city of San José. It is surrounded by 100% Rainforest. The park is a buffer zone for La Amistad International Park (“Friendship International Park”), which is shared by Costa Rica and Panamá. Immerse yourself in 1300 hectares (3400 acres) of tropical rainforest while relishing breathtaking views of endless mountains. Enjoy the world´s largest nocturnal-ambience frog habitat; delve deep into the forest on diverse walking trails and through the canopy level on an aerial tram or a zipline (“canopy tour”), admiring the sights and sounds of wild flora and fauna; feel the thunder of a spectacular waterfall almost at your fingertips; and learn at Veragua Biological Research Station, where you can see researchers discovering new species! The park has a restaurant, a coffee shop, a souvenir shop and full accessible trails.
Experiencing a completely different morning on the beach, the day can start with enjoying boogie boards and kayaks. At around noon contagious and soft reggae music will start playing just at the beach. People will come around the Afro Caribbean music band. A succulent lunch will be served at the beach. Bar services will be available (alcoholic and soft beverages are not included).
Heading towards Manzanillo, a typical fishermen Caribbean village, beautiful golden and white sandy beaches will appear along the gravel road, as well as cozy little houses of Caribbean style. Flowers, plants and a great variety of wildlife can be seen. During the ride there is a stop at a local bar and at the beach of Manzanillo to take a refreshing bath in the Caribbean Sea.
This exciting adventure always depends upon the conditions of the climate, the tides and a bit of good luck as well. Starting by boat in beautiful Manzanillo Town the ride to Punta Mona will take about half an hour passing along a pristine rocky sea shore with impressive cliffs. Schools of bottle nose dolphins, Atlantic spotted dolphins and even the rare tucuxi can be seen. Even if the observation of these animals is very frequent, there is no guaranty, of course.
Following a trail through the jungle, this trip includes frog observation, the visit of an indigenous village with interesting explanations of the head of the family about their habits and culture and a visit of the Medicinal Botanical Garden, to learn more about the use of plants as medicine.
